Gawthorpe Parrot - 3-Day Workshop with Harriet Roberts - 30 Nov-2 Dec 2027

About This Design

The remarkable work of art that this design came from is the jewel in the crown of the Gawthorpe Textile Collection along with a matching set of bedroom furnishings including a companion bed hanging, a large bedspread, a complete bed pelmet, two window pelmets, and four chair covers. These beautiful crewel work embroideries were stitched by The Honorable Rachel Kay-Shuttleworth. They took her over 10 years to stitch and were completed in the early 20th-Century.

Kit Includes

Every material in this kit has been carefully selected for its quality, historic integrity and longevity, with the hope that your finished embroidery will become an heirloom to be treasured for generations. It is believed that Rachel Kay-Shuttleworth used Appletons Crewel Wool in her original embroidery, making it particularly special that we are able to continue that tradition today. Appletons has been producing fine English embroidery wools for nearly two centuries, and we are proud to use and support this remarkable historic company in our own recreations.

About the Class

Crewel Work Company Classes, Across the Pond!

We are excited to announce that The Crewel Work Company is bringing a small programme of in-person classes to the United States in 2027, giving our Stateside stitchers a wonderful opportunity to learn one of our historic designs without travelling across the Atlantic.

The Gawthorpe Parrot will be taught by Harriet Roberts during a three-day class in Oxford, Mississippi. A long-standing Crewel Work Company supporter and co-creator of several of our special edition designs, Harriet has stitched extensively with Phillipa over many years and, under her guidance, has become a trusted crewel work company ambassador and tutor. Her familiarity with our projects, techniques and approach makes her particularly well placed to guide students through this beautiful, historic design.

Classes are deliberately small and take place in Harriet’s own home, creating a relaxed and welcoming environment with plenty of opportunity for individual attention. Across the three days, Harriet will guide students through the Gawthorpe Parrot, helping with techniques, troubleshooting and all those small details that make such a difference to the finished embroidery.

Refreshments are provided each day (lunch is not included), so once you arrive, you can settle in and enjoy three days devoted to stitching, learning and spending time with fellow crewel enthusiasts. You will also have a chance to look around Harriet's home, which is a veritable museum of crewel work company designs.

For our American customers who have long wanted the experience of learning a Crewel Work Company design in person, this is a very special opportunity — and we are delighted to finally be bringing these classes to your side of the Atlantic.
