Hazel Blomkamp

Hazel Blomkamp is a celebrated embroidery artist, designer, and author based in South Africa. For more than 20 years, she has been known for her distinctive fusion of traditional crewel embroidery with contemporary flair and vibrant colour. Entirely self-taught, her passion was first inspired by her grandmother’s stitching and has since grown into a lifelong creative pursuit.

Hazel is the co-author, with Phillipa Turnbull, of Crewelwork Then and Now and has written numerous other titles on embroidery and beadwork. Her books and articles are loved by stitchers worldwide for their inventive approach and clear, inspiring guidance. She also contributes regularly to publications in South Africa and internationally.

As a tutor, Hazel is known for her engaging and encouraging teaching style, helping students build confidence while mastering complex techniques. She has taught extensively across South Africa and abroad, sharing her deep knowledge and love of colour, texture, and design through workshops and online teaching.
