About the Original 18th Century Design

The Dunollie Pocket

The original Dunollie Pocket is one of the most cherished embroidered items in the Dunollie Textile Collection. It is thought to have been worn by the ladies of the house at Dunollie Castle, which has been home to the chiefs of the MacDougall clan since the 12th century.

Popular from the 17th century onwards, pockets were detachable accessories that ladies used to carry personal items. Tied around the waist and independent of clothing, they hung beneath skirts and were accessible through openings in the dress and petticoats.

The original Dunollie Pocket is stitched in Tambour Work, a technique that became very popular in the late 18th century.

How we give back

We are passionate about keeping embroidery alive for future generations and supporting the talented artisans, collection owners, and arts professionals involved in their care.

Where possible, we donate a portion of the sale price directly to the castle, country house, or institution that owns the original embroidery.

These donations specifically support the care and conservation of historic embroideries in the respective collection, as well as the training of staff involved in their upkeep.
