About the Design

Glamis Whitework

Designed especially for beginners, this beautiful whitework design has been created by acclaimed Australian embroidery artist Di Kirchner. Celebrated for her mastery of whitework and reticella - Di's design offers a unique opportunity to learn foundational techniques in this traditional embroidery craft.

This design is inspired by an exquisite floral roundel set into the plasterwork in the impressive ceiling in the Drawing Room at Glamis Castle in Angus, Scotland. Crafted in 1621, the moulded designs depict the '9 worthies' - nine historical, scriptural, and legendary men of distinction who personify the ideals of chivalry established in the Middle Ages. Divided into Pagan, Jewish and Christian groups, they became touchstones of courage and honour in art and literature.

Di is a graduate of the Royal School of Needlework’s Diploma in Technical Hand Embroidery (2024). With over 20 years of experience designing, teaching, and contributing to Inspirations Studios publications, she specialises in traditional techniques such as needlelace and whitework.

Which frame should I use

We recommend using a Hands Free Seat Frame with a paddle base or table clamp.

Alternatively you may prefer to use a 'Slate Frame' or other frame of your choice. You will also need a pair of scissors and a thimble if you use one.
