In April 2025, a group of stitchers from around the world gathered in Scotland for a week of creativity, connection, and inspiration at our Residential Embroidery Retreat. From the lively streets of Edinburgh to the tranquil shores of Loch Fyne, this unforgettable experience combined expert tuition, historical charm, and the warmth of a truly special community.
We began in Edinburgh, where guests were greeted with seamless care. “I was surprised at how much they did for us,” shared Patricia. “Someone was there to pick us up at the airport... The hotel in Edinburgh was smack in the center of everything. Absolutely recommend.”
After a warm welcome in Edinburgh, we journeyed west to explore the romantic Inveraray Castle—an early highlight that set the tone for the days ahead.
From there, we continued on to the majestic Stonefield Castle, where the real magic began: daily embroidery classes led by Phillipa Turnbull, Kate Barlow, Zina Kazban, and Deborah Wilding.
Alexia described the experience beautifully:
“They created an atmosphere of profound positivity and fun all while providing an intense level of learning and cultural enrichment, and lots of tasty tea breaks! In fact, the shortbread cookies were almost as scrumptious as the beautiful projects we were stitching.”
Throughout the week, students immersed themselves in historic needlework projects, stitching under the expert guidance of our tutors. The retreat featured a rich variety of beautiful embroidery designs — Zina’s Dunollie Thistle, Kate’s enchanting Feller Unicorn, Phillipa’s Dunollie Pocket and Deborah’s Dunollie Rose and Honeysuckle. Below, you can see these stunning works that perfectly capture the skill and creativity nurtured during the week.
🎶 But it wasn’t all stitching and sightseeing—our evenings were filled with laughter, music, and new friendships. One of the highlights was a traditional Scottish ceilidh, complete with live musicians, dancing, and plenty of smiles.
As one guest put it, “What a lovely way to spend a week abroad! Everyone in attendance was so friendly and willing to share their talents. I can't wait to do this again!”
Maxine, a returning guest, summed it up perfectly:
“Once again it was a flawless experience… The tutors, the classes, the accommodation, food, and castle and museum trips were all of the highest quality. I have already booked the next three retreats!”
The camaraderie of the retreat was just as memorable as the stitching. “What a lovely way to spend a week abroad,” wrote Barbara. “Everyone in attendance was so friendly and willing to share their talents.”
From thoughtful details to unforgettable hospitality, our time at Stonefield Castle left a lasting impression. “Every detail was well thought and carried out seamlessly,” said Monica. “The food was fantastic and the staff at the castle couldn't do enough for us.”
And Sandra put it simply and sweetly:
“Wonderful company, excellent tutors and embroidery and glorious place to stay.”
