About the Design

Glamis Countess Pillowe

Step into the regal world of Glamis Castle with this two-day intermediate crewel work class led by Phillipa Turnbull, featuring the exquisite Countess Pillow design. Drawing on the historic bed hangings from the Queen Mother’s bedroom—masterfully recreated by Phillipa in 2001 to celebrate the Queen Mother’s 100th birthday—this project is rich in heritage and artistry.

The Countess Pillow showcases a stunning Regency-style lattice adorned with the Scottish thistle and English rose, symbolizing the union of cultures and the beauty of traditional needlework. Designed for intermediate stitchers, the class offers an opportunity to refine your crewel work skills while exploring more intricate stitches and techniques.

Phillipa will guide you through the process, sharing stories of Glamis Castle, the Queen Mother, and the original bed hangings that inspired this piece. By the end, you will have a sophisticated embroidery that captures both the elegance of the Regency era and the enduring legacy of Glamis Castle.

On booking your class, you will receive a booking confirmation by email straight away. This will also give you access to your Crewel Work Company Dashboard where you will see that you are enrolled in the class.

Then, in January your embroidery kit will be dispatched to you. This will include all the materials (minus the tools) that you will need to take part in the class - including all threads, fabric, needles, charts, and full instructions.

During January you will also gain access to your course space on our community platform (Circle) where your tutor will start to prepare you for the class and you can ask questions and start to prepare for your class.

Be sure to review the equipment you need below, and allow time to receive the equipment if you need to order it, such as a frame and scissors.

After the class, your recordings will be uploaded to your Dashboard on our website.

Are the classes recorded?

Lifetime Access

All the Zoom workshops will be recorded and offered to those booked on to the specific class as a back up for anything they have missed or would like to go over. These recordings will be accessible indefinitely.

How do I join the class?

Accessing Zoom

This class will take place online. You will be sent the Zoom link in good time for the session by email. The link will also be accessible through our community platform.

In order to make the most of your experience, we recommend to:

- Use a desktop computer of laptop to connect to the Zoom session (we don’t recommend joining with a smart phone as you will struggle to see the stitch demonstrations on the small screen. Zoom controls can also be challenging to manage on a tablet so we recommend a larger device if you have one)
- Have the Zoom software ready downloaded on your device
- Find a quiet, comfortable place to sit with a stable place to rest your device.
