A Magical Week at Askham Hall:
Stitching, History, and Unforgettable Moments

Our recent retreat at Askham Hall was truly one for the memory books! Nestled in the heart of the Lake District, Askham Hall’s historic charm and country home atmosphere set the perfect scene for a week of creativity, learning, and connection. With exclusive use of the hall, we felt like guests in a grand yet welcoming home—surrounded by heritage and comfort at every turn.

Our adventure began in Edinburgh, where we gathered at the Kimpton Charlotte Square Hotel for our first evening together and a fascinating lecture on Mellerstain House, setting the stage for what was to come.

The following day, we journeyed to Mellerstain itself, where we had the rare privilege of viewing their extraordinary embroidery collection up close—a highlight for every needlework enthusiast.

Journeying by coah to Askham, we settled in for days filled with inspiring workshops. Kate Barlow led us through the intricate Book of Psalms project, while Zina Kazban guided students in creating the beautiful Mellerstain Bird.

Jacqui Hyman joined us for a special lecture and bonus demonstration on finishing a book cover, gave everyone the confidence to look forward to completing their designs and turning them into their own family heirlooms.

Phillipa also hosted a bonus crewel work workshop at the end of the week, where we stitched the elegant Mellerstain Roundel—an experience that brought everyone together one last time.

Evenings were especially cosy, as we gathered for captivating lectures from Charlotte Fairbairn, Jacqui Hyman, and Phillipa Turnbull, each sharing their expertise and stories. We also attempted to complete several jigsaws, some of which were successful!

Of course, no retreat is complete without delicious food, and we were spoiled rotten with delightful meals throughout our stay and wine served every Frenchly by somellier Nico.

Two evenings featured tasting menus by Michelin-starred chef Richard Swale, which were nothing short of extraordinary. We were also treated to garden tours, in particuar of the 'Kitchen Garden' where head gardener Diane showed us how almost all ingredients used in the kitchen are grown on site.

The magic continued into the night with musical performances: Sarah Salloum enchanted us with the lute, Richard filled the hall with beautiful piano music, and Phillipa’s a cappella group brought joyful harmony to our evenings.

We also ventured out for inspiring excursions—to Grasmere and Dove Cottage, the beloved home of Wordsworth, and to Appleby, where we welcomed guests into our studio and explored the town.

It was a week brimming with creativity, learning, laughter, and friendship. Thank you to everyone who joined us and made this retreat so special. We can’t wait for the next adventure together!
