About the Muncaster Bed Hanging Kit

A Jacobean Treasure from Muncaster Castle

Embark on an extraordinary stitching journey with the Muncaster Bed Hanging Kit, a masterpiece of historical crewel embroidery. This design is a meticulous reproduction of a 17th-century bed hanging from Muncaster Castle in Cumbria, England, renowned for its intricate Jacobean motifs and vibrant colours.

This Special Edition kit was created with the exclusive permission of the Pennington family, owners of Muncaster Castle for over 800 years. In 2018, Phillipa Turnbull and her team began the detailed work of charting and colour-matching each section of the bed hanging. With the help of embroidery artist Harriet Roberts, a formal stitched replica was completed, becoming the model for this truly heirloom-worthy project.

Measuring approximately 60 x 40 inches (150 x 100 cm) on a linen twill ground of 72 x 60 inches (180 x 150 cm), the completed piece is a testament to the grandeur of Jacobean textile art. The design features the iconic 'Tree of Life' motif, surrounded by stylised flora and fauna, reflecting the opulence of the period.
