Workshop: Rowan Tree Crewelwork
In this special workshop as part of the Selvedge Textile Month in London, Phillipa invites stitchers to explore the Rowan Tree design – a celebration of Arts & Crafts style. Swirling foliage and bright red rowan berries are stitched using a wide variety of crewelwork techniques, including Long and Short Stitch for soft shading, French Knots, Crewel Stem, Pistil and Spiral Buttonhole, Whipped Spider’s Web, and Raised Satin Stitches. In September, Phillipa will join the the Selvedge "Textile Month" with an online lecture exploring the rich history of crewelwork. Phillipa will guide attendees through the origins and evolution of crewelwork, from its roots in Jacobean embroidery to its place in contemporary textile practice. She will share stories behind historical designs, the materials used, and the enduring appeal of this richly textured technique. Whether you’re a seasoned stitcher or simply curious about heritage textile traditions, Phillipa’s engaging and informative talk will offer a rare opportunity to connect with the artistry and history of British crewelwork.
