About This Design

The Jacobean Leaf was inspired by an early English design Phillipa first discovered on a pair of historic crewel work bed hangings at Eyam Hall in Derbyshire.

Since that first encounter, Phillipa has studied variations of the same distinctive motif in historic bed hangings and textile collections across Britain and the USA, including examples in Wales, Scotland, Northern England and Williamsburg.

Her interpretation brings together a wonderful collection of historic crewel work stitches from the late 17th and early 18th centuries. You’ll work Long & Short Stitch as soft shading, Crewel Stem, French Knots, Ermine Stitch and seven different variations of Laid & Couched Work, including the particularly beautiful Trellis Stitch.

Despite the variety of techniques, this is a wonderfully manageable design. The instructions take you through the embroidery in a carefully considered order, allowing you to build your crewel work skills as the Jacobean Leaf gradually comes to life.
