The Design
Lady with a Lute
This 17th century embroidered panel, which was recently acquired for our collection will be the subject of our exciting new course with Kate Barlow.
During this 10 month course, which will begin in September 2024, students will recreate their very own embroidered panel replicating the exquisite historic stitches featured in the original.
The Stitches
Historic Techniques
This panel features an impressive array of techniques, that are elegantly stitched together to create a painted effect. Kate is currently working on recreating the design, and here is pictured her progress so far!
The stitches and techniques include: Long & short/silk shading, Encroaching Satin Stitch, Over-twisted Moss Stitch, Silk Wrapped Purl over Padding, Cut Silk Pile Stitch, Split Stitch, Couched Silk Thread, Couching Silk Gimp, Back Stitch and Cord making
