The Muncaster Bed Hanging - the day of reckoning!

The Muncaster Bed Hanging - the day of reckoning!

On Thursday last week the whole team travelled to Muncaster Castle to present our recreated Muncaster Bed Hanging to the owners Iona and Peter and also to perform the final colours and design checks before the final motifs are added to the replica embroidery by our consultant embroiderer Harriet Roberts.

The story was even featured on the evening news!

Harriet has been working under the expert guidance of Phillipa for over a year now to produce a replica Jacobean bed hanging in preparation for making a kit for those of you with an (arguably certifiable) passion for crewel work to enjoy. The number of messages between Phillipa, Harriet and our team in the office ran into the thousands as design and colour choices were agonised and, at times, argued tooth and nail over!We are so proud to now be reaching the final stages of development for this kit, which replaces the Glasgow Bedspread as our pinnacle project kit in our crewel work range at the end of this year. And it was a very proud moment indeed for all of us, but particularly Harriet, Georgie and Frankie who have really put the leg work in, when we were able to show the replica embroidery to Iona & Peter Frost-Pennington and their team at Muncaster.

Wonderful! When you do the color matching for the kits, are you able to determine the original colors— or do you have to match to the way they have changed over time? How different are the colors on the front versus the back (lined) side of the original?

Magnificent! Should you ever be in Stockport, or Stafford, or the Potteries, do visit Staircase House, the Ancient High House, or Ford Green Hall, to see the replica bed hangings and bed covers, worked by the volunteer groups, the Staircase Stitchers, the Borough Broderers and the Ford Green Threaders over the last thirty years.
So wonderful to take stitchers through the historical techniques and see them recreate textiles for the local historic buildings.
The current project is a hanging, on scarlet Melton cloth, with gold work and needlepoint octagons, to hang above the High Table in the Great Hall at Bramall Hall.
Your Muncaster project is just beautiful.
