Gawthorpe Arts & Crafts Poppies

Deborah Wilding
Intermediate

This vibrant design replicates a very special Art & Crafts embroidery in the Gawthorpe Textile Collection archives. The original embroidery, which is a large item perhaps used as a hanging or table cloth, has been cleverly interpreted as a mirrored design by Deborah Wilding, who has recreated the embroidery in DMC stranded cotton, providing students with an accessible way to learn and enjoy silk shading techniques in complex shapes across this painterly design.

About the design

Gawthorpe Poppies: The Beauty of the Arts & Crafts

This fabulous, vibrant design has been recreated by Deborah based on a larger early-20th Century Arts & Crafts embroidery, which until recently was on display in the Gawthorpe Hall Textile Galleries. The original textile, has a complex repeating pattern bordering a large piece of fabric, with open flowers, buds, stems and leaves.

The embroidery has been completed using the long and short techniques (silk shading), which is often referred to as thread painting due to the beautiful, naturalistic finish. During this class, Deborah will tutor you in how to achieve the painterly effect of silk shading and give you tips that will improve your technique going forward.

You will be supplied with a selection of yellows and greens to replicate the gorgeous tonal shifts on the original piece. For this class, design elements have been taken and adapted to create a mostly symmetrical design. You will be taught one side of the design during the class, and be equipped with all the knowledge and materials needed to complete the other side at you own pace.
