"The fabric you use is a great compliment to your clients. The best quality I have ever encountered, and I have completed many kits" - Pat, Pennsylvania
“Many years specialising in Crewel Work have taught me to use only the highest quality linen twill to obtain the best results from my stitching” - Phillipa Turnbull
Our 'Jacobean' Linen Twill is produced exclusively for The Crewel Work Company from flax grown on four farms in the far north of Scotland, far enough away from pollution to produce the natural "oatmeal with honey” colour. It is woven by our specialist historic textile weaver and it is featured in all of our kits.
We also supply this beautiful, un-dyed natural material by the metre so if you would like to create your own design or if you have a project that requires the very best and historically accurate linen, then we are happy to provide you with the size you need. Please contact us via the contact page to request a quote.
The fabric is in a traditional "Z" twist, with a high thread count, faithfully replicating linen used in the best crewel pieces from the 17th and 18th Centuries in England and Scotland. The higher the thread count the easier it is to stitch, and the better the end result. The correct side to embroider is the ‘ridged’ side and showing this twill weave is an essential element in crewel work.
Linen fact: If it is a good year for wine, then it is a good year for linen!
Each length of linen also comes with one of our speciality gold-plated Crewel needles.
Unfortunately we are unable to supply our linen wholesale.
