By special permission from the owners of Castles and Country Houses in Scotland and England, Phillipa Turnbull brings to you the finest in historic needlepoint. Each canvas is accurately hand and stitch painted, in both colour and scale, to replicate the original 16th Century needlepoint from Traquair and Muncaster Castle.

Traquair, Scotland

Traquair is the oldest Royal Castle in Scotland and houses an outstanding collection of 16th and 17th Century textiles.

 Muncaster Castle

For the past twenty years I have been a frequent visitor at Muncaster Castle, near my home in Cumbria, England, researching their wonderful collection of needlepoint and crewel work which has been acquired by the Pennington family over the past centuries.

The canvases measure 21 x 29”, and the design area is 16 x 24”. They are painted on 18 count brown canvas. The dark blue background may be worked over two threads of canvas in double scale, with two strands of Appletons crewel wool, or 1 strand of Appletons tapestry wool.

The Original 16th Century Traquair Panel

The needlepoint at Traquair was discovered in recent years, hidden in an old chest and unused since it was stitched in the late 16th Century. These individual designs are known as “slips” and were ready to be cut around and stitched onto velvet or linen twill to be used for pillowes, bedhangings and other furnishings.
